EMERSON CLIMATE TECHNOLOGIES ANNOUNCES UPGRADES TO ITS COPELAND® DISCUS® LINE OF REFRIGERATION COMPRESSORS
ST. LOUIS, September 19, 2005 – Emerson Climate Technologies, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), today announced that it has made several upgrades to its Copeland® Discus® line of semi-hermetic commercial refrigeration compressors. Improvements include an extended envelope for low-condensing operation and a new nomenclature that makes it easier to select and apply the compressor in applications. The upgrades will deliver to end-users and designers more efficient operation and flexibility in selecting compressors.
“The Discus compressor platform is one of the most popular compressors in the industry, with an installed base of more than two million worldwide,” said Jim Mozer, marketing director for Copeland Refrigeration. “The revamped Discus line features improvements to performance, reliability and efficiency that will significantly affect the supermarket operator’s bottom line.”
The Discus line has been approved to operate at lower condensing temperatures after extensive in-house and field trials across the country. While older Discus models were traditionally approved to only operate at 70 degrees Fahrenheit condensing or above, the new models can operate at 40 degrees for low-temperature applications and 50 degrees for medium-temperature applications. This low-condensing capability has been achieved by continually improving the product, with features such as the Delta suction Reed. Discus compressors are ideal for use in new store construction. Actual field-testing indicated that refrigeration racks operating with a low-condensing Discus compressor gained an annual energy efficiency of 12 percent, which translated to $7,000 in energy savings. This is important, since energy savings is one of the top concerns of supermarket executives throughout the industry.
The nomenclature used to describe the Discus compressor has also been changed to make selecting and applying compressors easier and more intuitive. The new nomenclature moves away from a horsepower-based convention to a capacity-based one. This move enables an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) to correctly size and pick the right compressor for each application.
“Using a horsepower range for the compressor doesn’t tell you what you want to know,” said Mozer. “The new nomenclature allows us to put the compressor’s capacity and application in the name, so that it will make the model easier to spec and give designers more options. This strategy reflects the nomenclature of our other compressor products, like the Copeland Scroll™.”
With the new nomenclature, the fifth character of the compressor name now indicates the operating envelope of the compressor as a high-, medium- or low-temperature model. The sixth and seventh characters now signify capacity in BTUs per hour, instead of horsepower.
For example, under the previous nomenclature, a 15-horsepower, high-temperature Discus compressor would be indicated with the following: 3DS3A 150E-TFC-200. Under the new nomenclature, the same compressor will appear under the following label: 3DS3R 17ME-TFC-200. The customer can quickly identify that this compressor will give a capacity of 170,000 BTUs per hour at the compressor’s rated condition.
In addition to these changes, Copeland will soon introduce its Intelligent Store™ Discus compressor. Emerson’s Intelligent Store is an integrated suite of products and services that provides retail operators a new level of sophistication and insight into their operations. The company will also soon introduce a redesigned Discus compressor that will be optimized for medium-temperature applications. The optimized Discus models will allow equipment designers more choices for selecting the compressor most appropriate for each application. As a result, smaller breakers, contactors and wire sizes will be used, saving in application costs and providing the best value to end-users.
