EMERSON CLIMATE TECHNOLOGIES INTRODUCES INNOVATIVE CONTROL LINK™ PLATFORM FOR REFRIGERATION APPLICATIONS

ST. LOUIS, September 23, 2005 – Emerson Climate Technologies, a business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), today introduced its Control™ Link platform for refrigeration applications. Developed by Emerson’s Computer Process Controls division, the Control Link platform replaces the electromechanical equipment found in refrigerated cases, including reach-ins. The product, which can be integrated as part of Emerson’s Intelligent Store™, will be on display in the Emerson Climate Technologies booth at the North American Association of Food Equipment Manufacturers (NAFEM) show, September 23 to 25, in Anaheim, California.

“Control Link is part of the most advanced application-specific platform ever created by Emerson Climate Technologies, making it an exciting addition to our Intelligent Store suite of products,” said Herb Rippe, Computer Process Controls vice president and general manager. “The Control Link platform offers three major advantages over traditional electromechanical components – higher reliability, easy installation and lower initial costs. Our OEM and end-user customers alike will find very attractive.”

The system can be customized to fit a variety of applications or special products, especially smaller refrigeration systems like ice machines, walk-in coolers, reach-in coolers and beverage dispensers. Installation of the product is very easy, since the Control Link consolidates wiring to a central, convenient location. Replacing electromechanical equipment in refrigerated systems, including the defrost time clock, mechanical thermostat, defrost termination sensor and other components, results in lower initial costs. Less wiring, fewer components and the flexibility to install control modules in the most convenient location also helps deliver lower initial costs.

In addition to easier installation and lower costs, the Control Link is highly reliable. Patented “phase fire” relay cycling algorithms reduce downtime, protect product quality and enhance relay life far beyond industry standard life spans. Visual temperature and defrost indication provides peace of mind to the end-user, while an intelligently controlled defrost maximizes energy savings and reduces product shrink. Controller alarms, which may be viewed through the control display, a remote display modulate or remotely via a networked computer, are designed to indicate potentially dangerous conditions or maintenance issues.

Although a stand-alone product by nature, the Control Link platform integrates easily with Emerson’s E2 Facility Management System, which is also a part of Emerson’s Intelligent Store. This creates a truly intelligent solution that allows foodservice, convenience store and supermarket operators to do more than simply access valuable data; it allows operators to make better intelligent business decisions. Networking with the E2 enables numerous benefits that lower retailers’ operating costs, such as remote maintenance and troubleshooting, and alarm monitoring. Even more valuable than these benefits though, the E2 further increases product quality, enhances equipment reliability, and leads to reduced energy consumption.

The Control Link product has already gained early attention from several of Emerson Climate Technologies’ OEM customers, according to Rippe. “Southern Store Fixtures has expressed a great deal of interest in the platform,” he said. “Additionally, Structural Concepts, Inc. has signed on to install Control Link in all of its cases as soon as the product begins production in October.”

“Control Link is unique because it offers all of the features that we need in one simple controller, and will allow our customers to connect to a facility management system,” said Viktor Anderson, P.E., director of engineering for Structural Concepts Corporation. “We’re excited to start installing the unit in our products.”

Emerson’s Intelligent Store is an integrated suite of innovative products and services that provides retail operators a new level of sophistication and insight into their operations. The Intelligent Store is comprised of innovative products and services from Emerson Climate Technologies and other providers that, when combined, can provide maintenance, energy and reliability gains.
