Football fans are considered the twelfth player on the field and often make the difference between winning and losing. But football hooliganism is a threat to security lurking in the stadium.
Vienna's Hanappi Stadium, the second largest in the Austrian capital with a capacity of about 17,500, has already upgraded stadium security with a view to the 2008 European Championship. SBT played a big role with its state-of-the-art CCTV surveillance technology.
As Brigitte Ederer, member of the Siemens Austria Managing Board, says: "With this order we have underscored our competence in stadium security facilities." Officials in the security room can control 18 high-resolution, high-speed panning cameras during the games. The images are transmitted live on eight monitors and recorded in real time. This makes it possible to track events on a special operating terminal. If necessary, a video printer can print out portrait-size photographs. As a result, potential threats to security can be identified early on with the cameras and preventive measures taken
